What is Ring Topology? and Its Advantages and Disadvantages

Ring topology is the network topology in each network device is connected in the shape of a circle without any end point. Each node is connected together in a closed loop or a ring. Signals are transmitted in one direction i.e. clockwise or anti clockwise till it reaches its destination.
  • Each device in the ring has a repeater. When the device receive the signal intended for the other node, it just regenerated the bits and passes them along. Ring network passes a token. A token is a short message with the electronic address of the receiver. Each network interface card is given a unique electronic address, which is used to identify the computer on the network.
Advantages of ring topology:
  • The amount of cable required is lesser than other topology.
  • Short cable connection which causes an increase in network reliability.
  • High speed of data transmission.
Disadvantages of ring topology:
  • Failure of any one of computer on the network makes  the whole network down.
  • Difficult to diagnose faults.
  • It is difficult to add or remove any node from the network.
  • Network reconfiguration is difficult.
  • Requires more complicated control software than star topology.
